As an Aussie, I’m excited about the growth of the startup ecosystem here in Australia. Just a few years ago, if you asked what were some exciting unicorn startups to keep an eye out for, many would simply point at Canva. Apart from Atlassian, who led the scene and moved their HQ to Australia, there weren’t that many to keep an eye on.
Fast forward to today, we can boast 20+ unicorns (sorry, gated page, but just in case someone wants a source) here in Australia beyond the classic Canva example. Even better, hundreds are growing at a phenomenal rate that are currently sitting above $100M+.
But why the sudden acceleration of tech and innovation in the land down under?
From what I can see, the reasons include but are not limited to:
More funding is available from not only new VC funds but also ex founders who are reinvesting money back into the ecosystem
More startups are ambitious and willing to go global here in Australia. When I first studied entrepreneurship back in university a decade ago, Aussie startups tended to focus on the local market. This is my personal opinion that the market’s responding better to more global opportunities, especially in the APAC region.
Seen it, done it. Like many things, it’s easier to follow if others have already done it. Especially with the openness of founders in Australia, knowledge is shared across the ecosystem to help new founders grow
Have I left any out? Let me know 😄
Here’s a great infographic of some of the awesome tech startups to come out from Australia in recent times 🔽🔽🔽
